New Affiliation Rules

Please be advised that Hockey Canada has modified Regulation E35(a) regarding the number of games an Affiliated Player may play during the season.  Below is the previous wording and new wording.  This takes affect immediately for all levels of hockey.  We ask that this information be distributed to all teams and leagues.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Hockey PEI office.

PREVIOUS WORDING:  E35. a)  A player of a team of a lower Division or category of the same club, or of an affiliated team, or a specially affiliated player, may play for a team or teams of higher Divisions and categories at any time, but if he plays more than five (5) league and/or play-off games after January 10 with a team or teams in any higher Divisions or categories, he shall not be allowed to compete any further in the Division or category for which he is registered in the same season. Should a player play more than five (5) games with a team or teams in still higher Divisions and categories, than he shall accordingly disqualify himself from playing any further in lower Divisions and categories. For goaltender exceptions see Regulations B.42, E.36 (b).

NEW WORDING: E35. a) A player of a team of a lower Division or category of the same club, or of an affiliated team, or a specially affiliated player, may affiliate to a team or teams of higher Divisions and categories at any time, to a maximum of ten (10) games. However, if the player’s registered team completes its regular season and playoffs before the player’s affiliated team or teams, the player may thereafter affiliate an unlimited number of times. For goaltender exceptions see Hockey Canada Regulations B.42, E.36 (b).

E35. b) Exhibition and/or tournament games, which are not part of regular league games or play- off games, are excluded from the number of games referred to in Regulation E.35 (a).

In the past with the “5 game rule”, if a player were to play the 6th game they would remain with the higher category team.  That is not the case with this new rule.  With the NEW “10 game rule”, a player may play up to 10 games as an affiliate.  They are NOT permitted to play game #11.  If they play game #11, it does not mean they stay with the higher category team.  Ten games is a maximum for each player.  If they should play game #11, there will be penalties assessed to the team and coach that used an ineligible player.

However, as the regulation states.  Once a players regular carded team is done for the season, they may affiliate beyond game #10.
